Biography R.J. has extensive experience in trial and appellate advocacy. As lead trial counsel, R.J. has tried over 40 federal jury trials (including patent, trade secrets, breach of contract, securities fraud and white collar cases) and over 100 bench trials before Federal and State Court Judges throughout the country. He has briefed and argued over 30 criminal and civil appeals before the United States Courts of Appeal for the Seventh, Eighth, Ninth and Federal Circuits.
R.J. is AV Peer Review Rated, Martindale-Hubbell’s highest peer recognition for ethical standards and legal ability, and his practice emphasizes intellectual property litigation (including patent, trademark, copyright and trade secret litigation); antitrust litigation; white collar criminal defense; and corporate and government investigations.
R.J.’s technical areas of practice include medical devices, nutraceuticals, nutritional supplements, polymers, flowmeters, composites, encryption devices, identity cards, hardware and software control and process systems, dynamic random access and mass storage memory devices, digital and analog circuitry, telecommunications and chemical and mechanical processes.
R.J. was appointed by the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota to serve as a panel attorney under the Court’s Criminal Justice Act Plan. As a member of the Panel, R.J. has devoted hundreds of pro bono hours representing indigent defendants in federal felony cases. R.J. also serves on the Court’s Federal Practice Committee, which reviews and makes recommendations to the Court concerning its Local Rules, and its ECF Sealed Committee.
Previous legal experience includes Judicial Clerk to the Honorable John F. Grady, Chief Judge, United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois; Sidley & Austin, Chicago, Illinois; Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Minnesota and Fish & Richardson, P.C., P.A.
R.J.’s technical experience includes 7 years as a hardware and software design engineer for Honeywell, Inc., designing microprocessor based instrumentation (awarded 1983 Honeywell Technical Excellence Award).
