Biography James Hietala litigates patent and trade secret disputes. He also counsels clients in a variety of intellectual property matters, from product-development analysis to IP valuation during acquisitions. While James’s principal technical experience is in the telecommunications industry, he represents clients in industries ranging from implantable medical devices to financial trade secrets. James has argued dispositive and discovery motions in federal court.
In addition to his practice, James is a moot court instructor (2008–2010) at the University of Minnesota Law School. He is also a member of the Minnesota chapter of the Federal Bar Association’s Markman survey committee and was a member of the Minnesota chapter’s communications committee from 2007 to 2008. As a public service, James represents criminal defendants in federal court.
Before attending the University of Pennsylvania Law School, James worked as a systems engineer for a large telecommunications company and as a technical advisor and patent agent at Morgan & Finnegan.
James is a member of the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers.

Bar Admissions James is admitted to practice in Minnesota, before the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Eighth and Federal Circuits, and before the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota. He is also registered to practice before the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office.
