Alan G. Carlson Named Intellectual Property Lawyer of the Year Back to News

Minneapolis (12/14/2009) - Alan G. Carlson, managing partner of Carlson, Caspers, Vandenburgh and Lindquist, a leading intellectual property litigation law firm in Minneapolis, has been named the “Best Lawyers, Lawyer of the Year 2010, Intellectual Property Law - Minneapolis."

The award is presented by Best Lawyers, one of the oldest and most respected peer-reviewed publications in the legal profession. Only one lawyer in each specialty in each community is honored as the “Lawyer of the Year.”

“I am part of a tremendously talented community of intellectual property lawyers,” Carlson said. “Receiving this esteemed recognition from my peers is truly an honor.”

A 38-year intellectual property veteran, Carlson was the first patent lawyer to be a fellow in the prestigious American College of Trial Lawyers. He is consistently named a “Super Lawyer” by the Minnesota Journal of Law and Politics, and has been listed with Best Lawyers every year for the past 18 years.

Throughout his career, Carlson has achieved a number of multi-million dollar jury verdicts and continues to lead the firm in securing successful outcomes for intellectual property cases in and out of court. Most recently, Carlson and his team earned back-to-back jury verdicts of over $20 million for two Minnesota businesses. In 2008, the jury awarded $24.2 million to Anchor Wall Systems, Inc., a Minneapolis-based company that manufactures retaining wall products. With interest added to the award in 2009, total damages reached $30 million. Earlier this year, Carlson secured another multi-million dollar victory for Spectralytics, Inc., against Cordis, a J&J company. The jury awarded $22.35 million for infringement of a patented technique for making stents. With interest, that award also tops $30 million.

The selection process for the Best Lawyers honor involves peer-reviewed surveys submitted by thousands of lawyers confidentially evaluating their professional peers. Carlson received particular accolades from his peers regarding his abilities, professionalism and integrity, thus garnering his recognition as “Intellectual Property Lawyer of the Year.”

Steven Naifeh, managing editor of Best Lawyers, said, “We continue to believe – as we have believed for more than 25 years – that recognition by one’s peers is the most meaningful form of praise in the legal profession. We would like to congratulate Alan G. Carlson on being selected as the “Best Lawyers, Lawyer of the Year 2010, Intellectual Property Law - Minneapolis."
